The 180vl was designed to have two load-bearing vertical sides and just two crossbars keeping the weight to a minimum while maintaining the durability and sustainability you expect from your stove. The open end allows ample room for feeding natural fuels into the fire box without the need to remove your cookware from the flame in order to feed fuel.
